    Enigmatic wooden structure of Hadley

This structure has been on North Lane for a couple of years now. We're not sure what it's for.

    Cyclists' (and walkers') rest

This is a lovely little rest spot near the Northampton Bike Trail.

  • Free skunk

This hat was in a box labeled "free" next to the cyclists' rest spot. We decided not to take it.

  • Greenway sign

These signs directing cyclists toward the Mass Central Greenway have been cropping up all over.

One of several interesting mailboxes seen on the ride, this one on South St. in Williamsburg.

The sign is shortly after the last driveway on the road, which is now closed before it gets to the Northampton Reservoir.

  • The end of the road?

    The end of the road?

Not for us! I used a GPS marker to identify the spot so I could fix OpenStreetMap, which still indicates that the road is open.

  • Northampton Reservoir

    Northampton Reservoir

After passing the closed section of Williamsburg Road, we emerged at the Northampton Reservoir. This is the lower reservoir; the upper one is about 110 feet higher. We climbed up to it, and more, on the road to the right.

  • Along Whately Road

    Along Whately Road

Conway Road, in Whately, becomes Whately Road, in Conway. After passing Roaring Brook, the road emerges from the forest next to this beautiful pond (slowly becoming a marsh). It's my favorite spot on this road.

    Sausages!

Leaving Conway, we headed east on Route 112. There's a short climb out of the village, followed by a 3-mile descent into Deerfield. Unfortunately, Pekarski's was closed by the time we got there. We continued into South Deerfield for creemees.

As we headed south on Route 47, we saw a couple of hot-air balloons floating lazily in the summer evening sky.
