Ka'ena Point itself is used by several species of seabirds as a nesting area, including shearwaters and Laysan albatrosses. Dogs have decimated their populations, so there's now a fence separating the point from the rest of the island. The gates act like an airlock: one door has to be completely closed before the other one will open.
